Fiano and the Myth of the Bee Vine 🇮🇹
How an ancient name, a nineteenth-century fungus, and a lot of repetition turned a wine myth into common knowledge.
Ask a sommelier, a shop owner, or a Campanian winemaker about Fiano, and within a minute or two you will hear about the bees. The grape, they’ll tell you, is so sweet and so fragrant that bees swarm the ripening bunches, which is why the Romans named it the bee vine. I’ve been told this story more times than I can count, usually with the easy confidence of a fact that doesn’t need checking.
I went checking anyway. What I found was stranger than the story, and better.
I fell in love with Fiano in the fall of 2021, on a balcony in Sorrento, with a bottle of the 2019 Quintodecimo Exultet I’d picked at the suggestion of the owner of a wine shop in town. I’d expected something light and forgettable and got something serious instead: rich and concentrated citrus and orchard fruit, white florals, wet stone minerality, and a weight and texture I didn’t know a white could carry. The bee story arrived with the wine, the way it always does, and for a while I repeated it too. That bottle taught me what Fiano could be, and, eventually, that most of what I'd been told about it simply couldn’t be true.
The name, at least, is real and genuinely old. The Romans grew a vine they called vitis apiana, from the Latin apis meaning bee, and the wine from it, Apianum, gets a mention from both Pliny the Elder and Columella1. The word survived two thousand years and is still permitted on a Fiano di Avellino label today2. So the romance is earned. The explanation we bolt onto it, that bees come for the sweet and fragrant fruit, is the part that doesn’t survive contact with the grape.

Start with the fragrance, because it fails in a way that’s almost funny. Fiano is not an aromatic grape. It’s classified as non-aromatic, the opposite of something like Muscat, and the aromatic compounds it does have sit locked inside the berry as odorless, sugar-bound molecules called glycosides that only turn fragrant later, once fermentation breaks them loose3. An intact Fiano berry on the vine is not broadcasting honey and white flowers, because that perfume mostly doesn’t exist yet. We know this in unusual detail, because the man whose lab mapped Fiano’s aroma chemistry is Luigi Moio, the Campanian enology professor who wrote the standard work on how wine aroma forms45, and who, as it happens, made the bottle I had in Sorrento. The person best placed to describe Fiano’s scent is also the best witness that the grape keeps it hidden until the cellar.
The sweetness is no sturdier. Finished Fiano di Avellino is a dry wine of moderate alcohol levels, and whatever sugar the grape reaches by harvest is ordinary for ripe vinifera, with hardly anything left in the glass after fermentation. And even a determined bee runs into a wall, because a honey bee can’t open an intact grape. Its mouthparts can’t tear the skin. Bees feed on berries already split by birds, wasps, or rain, and the only grapes they breach themselves are thin-skinned ones6. Fiano is the wrong grape again: small, thick-skinned, low in juice7. In a healthy bunch it is one of the harder targets on the vine, not one of the softer. So the tidy version of the legend, sweet perfumed grape summons grateful bees, has nothing holding it up. No strong scent, no surplus sugar, no way in.
And yet there is a way to put bees on Fiano. It has nothing to do with sweetness, and everything to do with damage.

Fiano is notably prone to powdery mildew, the fungus that coats green tissue in a grey bloom, and the French national grapevine catalog is specific that it’s most vulnerable during flowering8. That timing matters, because flowering is exactly the window when the fungus does its worst to fruit. When powdery mildew infects a berry around bloom, it kills the skin’s ability to grow; the berry keeps swelling while its epidermis does not, and the skin splits9. The cracks leak juice and invite every spoilage organism in the vineyard. They would also, reliably, invite bees. Here, finally, is a mechanism that could deliver what the legend promises: a Fiano vine genuinely crawling with foragers. The bee vine, it seems, might have been named for a disease.
Except that it couldn’t have been, and the reason is a date.
Powdery mildew is not a Mediterranean native. It comes from eastern North America, where it was described on grapes in 1834, and it only reached Europe in 1845, turning up in an English greenhouse before spreading across the continent fast enough to cut the French crop by eighty percent within a decade1011. It arrived in Italy in 184912. Pliny and Columella named the bee vine in the first century, which puts nearly eighteen hundred years between the Roman name and the fungus that would have split the berries. Whatever the Romans were describing when they reached for apis, it was not mildewed fruit. The fungus that makes the story work didn’t exist in Italy until the middle of the nineteenth century.
Which forces the two halves of the legend apart. The name is Roman. The thing people claim to have seen, bunches alive with bees, almost certainly is not.
Line up the dates and a more plausible picture appears. Powdery mildew became endemic in Italy from 1849 onward, and that is also when Fiano was planted broadly across Campania, well before its near-collapse in the twentieth century, often on ordinary sites with the imperfect disease control of the day. A mildew-prone variety, in a newly infected country, on vineyards no one had chosen for airflow, would have split and leaked and drawn bees and wasps season after season for the better part of a century. And any grower who saw it already knew the ancient name. The bees seemed to confirm a label that predated them by two thousand years. A first-century word and a nineteenth-century fungus, meeting by accident and appearing to vouch for each other.
That is the tidiest story, not a proven one. Split fruit can come from rain, birds, or plain overripeness as easily as from mildew, and the deflating alternative is that the swarms were never especially Fiano's at all, that an evocative old name simply taught people to notice bees on this grape and pass the observation along. The fungus fits the dates too well to ignore, but it remains a guess.
If that is right, it would also help explain why no one can show you the bees today. The same 1850s crisis produced its own cure, sulfur, which became standard and remains so to this day13, and modern Irpinia compounds it by doing everything the nineteenth century didn’t: planting Fiano high on breezy, well-drained slopes chosen to keep the fungus down, opening the canopy, spraying on schedule. Fewer infected berries, fewer split berries, fewer bees. The effect faded not because the grape changed but because the growing did. We got good at preventing exactly the damage that wrote the legend, and the legend, having lost its evidence, kept going on momentum alone.

The honest version is messier than what the shop owner tells you, and I think it’s the better story. The name is a genuine Roman inheritance whose origin we can’t fully recover. The bees, if they ever truly favored this grape, belong to a much later and much more prosaic chapter, most likely a fungus that crossed an ocean and made an old name look briefly, accidentally true.
Strip both away and Fiano needs neither. The reasons to chase it down are in the glass: a white with real weight and texture, built on the dissolved solids winemakers call dry extract and an acidity that keeps it taut instead of heavy, citrus and stone fruit when young and turning to hazelnut and beeswax over a decade, longer than most Italian whites are made to last. The honey everyone invokes in the bee story is real, by the way. It’s just made in the cellar, from those released compounds, and not on the vine.
Today’s bottle, the 2024 Clelia Romano ‘Colli di Lapio’ Fiano di Avellino, offers a slightly different experience from the Exultet. The Exultet shows the more opulent and ageworthy side of the variety—and its price reflects the increased time and effort in the cellar, at around $60-75 USD for the current vintage. On the other hand, the Colli di Lapio gives us a more transparent look at Fiano as it’s vinified and aged entirely in stainless steel before being bottled. At $25-30 USD, the Colli di Lapio is built for more immediate consumption even though its spine of acidity will allow it to age gracefully for a few years.
In the glass, it is pale yellow and faintly hazy on the pour, probably unfined, though it settles within a few minutes. The nose is the generous part: honeysuckle, white peaches on the edge of bursting, a little yellow apple behind them, and a faint smoky, wet-stone minerality underneath. The palate is decidedly taut, leaning more into lemon and green apple over a vibrant spine of acidity, before the smoke and stone return on a long, saline mineral finish. There is just the faintest hint of creaminess from the lees contact during élevage.
I still talk people into Fiano whenever I can. I’ve just stopped telling them about the bees. The name is the oldest thing about this grape, older than every explanation anyone has offered for it, and the one we’ve settled on turns out to be younger than the railways. Vitis apiana kept its secret for two thousand years. The bees only showed up to take the credit.
